Court Judgment: Indus Valley owes workers $700,000

Join us to demand enforcement of the labor law!

We are workers of Indus Valley, Earthen Oven and Amla, restaurants owned by Phuman Singh and Lakhvir Singh. Many of us worked more than 60 hours per week and were paid as little as $3 an hour with no overtime pay. The employers would scream at us: “Stupid,” “f___ you,” “animal.” They would make anti-Muslim remarks about the Muslim workers. They shoved and kicked some workers. Several were injured or developed health problems. The bosses fired several of us who were organizing. Six groups of workers have sued the Singhs!

Some of us went to the State Department of Labor (DOL) in 2008 to file a complaint. We waited 6 years while the bosses refused to pay. We filed a lawsuit in 2014. To avoid responsibility, the bosses changed the business name from Indus Valley to Manhattan Valley.

We got a decision of $700,000 in court last year. The bosses refused to pay it. Recently, the judge in our case ordered the “new” business Manhattan Valley to pay us the $110,000 that it supposedly owed the “old” Indus Valley. This came after our pickets and our efforts with other workers and groups to shine light on wage theft and the lack of enforcement of the labor law. This is a positive development! But, under the current law, Manhattan Valley can easily change names again to duck responsibility for paying. Meanwhile, the bosses continue with their businesses around the city, making a lot of money.

Enough already! We’ve waited too long for justice!

We demand that Phuman and Lakhvir Singh:

–pay the workers all our owed wages

–hire back the workers who were fired for organizing

We also demand that our elected representatives strengthen the labor law.
