Let’s join together to stop the epidemic of wage theft!
Call to Action: Rally in front of Manhattan Valley Restaurant
Thursday, December 15, 1 p.m
Many of us workers–union and non-union–have come forward against stolen wages. Many of us have gone to the State Department of Labor to file a complaint, or have gotten a lawyer to file a lawsuit in court. We often receive a decision or court judgment but we can’t collect.
The Indus Valley restaurant case is one glaring example. Some of us filed a complaint with the State DOL in 2008. For six years the case dragged on, and the employers refused to pay. When we filed a lawsuit in 2014, our bosses changed the business’ name from Indus Valley to Manhattan Valley to avoid responsibility. Last year, the Federal Court issued a judgment to the workers of $700,000.
Our bosses, Phuman and Lakhvir Singh, are ignoring the court judgment and refuse to pay it. They fraudulently transferred their assets and continue to operate their businesses around the city, which include Bergdorf Goodman employee cafeteria, the Dakota Bar, Columbus Gourmet Deli, Manhattan Valley and City Market Café.
We Indus Valley workers have had no choice but to picket in front of Manhattan Valley for last four months. We’ve been calling on New Yorkers to boycott all the businesses that the Singhs own.
We invite you to join us in standing up for our owed wages and in speaking out against wage theft—no matter what kind of job you are doing. Let’s come together and call on our government to step up enforcement of the labor law. When bosses like ours can get away with laughing at a court decision and keep making money from their many businesses, that just sends a message to bosses all around the city that they can steal from their workers too.
The Indus Valley workers and Justice Will Be Served Campaign also urge everyone to:
- Join the rally on December 15 at 1 p.m. at Manhattan Valley, 2636 Broadway, to demand that the Singhs pay the outstanding judgment, and help the workers recover their stolen wages;
- Boycott Manhattan Valley and all the businesses owned by the Singhs, and help gain support for our weekly picket line on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 pm in front of Manhattan Valley, 2636 Broadway;
- Join us in demanding that our State elected officials pass the SWEAT bill (Securing Wages Earned Against Theft) in New York State to prevent employers from easily transferring their assets to avoid their legal responsibilities and undermine those businesses that comply with the law.
