CALL TO REPEAL EMPLOYER SANCTIONS PROVISION OF IRCA [1]
AFRICAN-AMERICAN, LABOR, AND IMMIGRANT GROUPS COME TOGETHER TO STOP THE GOVERNMENT FROM SOLICITING UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 -- 12:00PM
New York City – 26 Federal Plaza
(Broadway between Duane & Worth St. – 4/5/6/R/W train to City Hall, A/C to Chambers St.)

Break the Chains”,a national alliance of African-American, labor and immigrant groups, is calling for the government to stop bringing undocumented immigrants into the country through the creation of guestworker programs and maintenance of the Employer Sanctions provision of IRCA – a modern-day slave law. As Congress prepares to discuss immigration reforms, the alliance is announcing a new legislative initiative to repeal this anti-worker, anti-immigrant law, in order to pave the way for creating good jobs for all and promoting national unity and security.

Employer Sanctions has undercut working conditions for all American workers, by creating an underclass of undocumented workers who have no rights and are forced to work under slave-like conditions for pay that no American worker can survive on. It has expanded the underground economy to a point where law-abiding businesses cannot compete. Since the passage of IRCA, the demand for undocumented labor has expanded enormously. Employer Sanctions is one of the main factors that caused illegal immigration to increase almost ten-fold. U.S. citizen and immigrant workers are uniting to call for a repeal of this law and the creation of measures to allow undocumented workers to adjust their immigration status. On September 22, individuals will also speak out on how their lives and their families have been impacted.

Actions will also take place on the same day in other cities across the country.

[1] Employer Sanctions is a provision of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), making it illegal for employers to hire undocumented workers.
