Are you still waiting for the LMDC Grant?
Have you been denied the LMDC Grant?
LMDC (the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation) is not giving
out the money they are supposed to give to poor people, instead
they are using these funds to build luxury housing to kick poor
people out of the Lower East Side and Chinatown.
LMDC funds come from Federal Anti-Poverty money. The purpose
of this money is to help 9-11 victims living in Lower Manhattan.
While many people are facing difficulties paying the rent and
are still desperately waiting for assistance, LMDC is having a
secret closed-door meeting to discuss how to use the $1.3 billion
in leftover funds. Governor Pataki, Mayor Bloomberg and HUD have
already taken $50 million to build housing for the rich. (Only
300 apartments will be "affordable" housing for people
who make $50,000-85,000 per year.) Low-income residents cannot
live in this housing and will be shoved aside.
If you haven't received money from LMDC or if you are still waiting
for a response, don't wait any longer. In a couple of months LMDC
will reject countless low-income residents because there will
be no more money!
We demand:
1. A Two-year Commitment-Based Grant available to
zone 3 and extend the boundaries of zone 3 at least to Houston
St.
2. Family Grants should be the same for the West Side and the
East Side
3. Resolve all pending cases w/in 1 month & institute a clear
appeals process for people whose applications have been rejected
at application centers, or whose applications have been processed
and denied
4. Ensure LMDC grants do not have a negative impact on recipients'
government benefits by advocating with the Social Security Administration
and the Human Resources Administration.
5. Change the confusing application policies and documentation
requirements that shut out Latinos, African Americans, Chinese
& other low-income residents of the Lower East Side &
Chinatown.
6. LMDC must change its redevelopment priorities to address the
needs of low-income families by protecting low-income housing
& manufacturing jobs.
7. Extend the deadline beyond the poorly-publicized two-week grace
period and make sure communities are aware of the extension.
ACT NOW!
We must use this chance to protest in front of this secret closed-door
meeting to raise our demands.
