Garment Workers Demand Overtime Pay for 80-hr Work Weeks - Denounce Sweatshop Bosses Refusing to Comply with Labor Law

What: Press Conference and Rally

When:
Wednesday, July 18th @ 12:30pm

Where:
265 37th St. and 8th Avenue, Midtown Manhattan

Why:
Garment workers, the Ain't I a Woman?! Campaign[1] and other supporters are calling out garment factory bosses De Shu Qu and Yu Wei Quan for refusing to take responsibility for the sweatshop conditions in their factories.

For many years, Shu Quan Shi and his co-workers labored in Qu and Quan's garment factories, Lily Fashion and Zhu Len Fashion. Mr. Shi often worked seven days a week for 12 hours a day, yet he was never paid overtime. Moreover, the boss illegally deducted 3% of his wages. In November 2006, he filed a complaint with the Department of Labor (DOL). Almost a year later, Qu and Quan have ignored the DOL and refused to resolve this matter. Instead, employers have changed the name of the factory which has been contracting with GUESS, a company with a long history of sweatshop violations.
Workers from across the city are demanding Qu and Quan take responsibility for their wrongdoing. Join the Ain't I a Woman?! Campaign and its supporters on Wednesday in a growing workers' movement to put an end to sweatshops and to take back more control over our time.

The Ain't I A Woman?! Campaign is sponsored by National Mobilization Against SweatShops and Chinese Staff & Workers' Association

[1] The Ain't I A Woman?! Campaign is an effort led by women to bring together working people from diverse backgrounds and their organizations to fight against the rising tide of sweatshop conditions in the U.S. that often affects women most severely. In the past, our campaign has recovered millions of dollars in backpay from manufacturers and retailers such as DKNY, Tracy Evans, Kate Warner, Street Beat Sportswear, Odd & Evens and many more.
