Chinatown and the Lower East Side, a long-time immigrant community of low to middle income working families and small businesses, is now being threatened with mass displacement. In recent years, we have seen our homes, our workplaces, and our businesses hurt by gentrification pressures accelerated by the East Village/ LES rezoning plan passed in 2008.
Our community needs a rezoning plan that will serve and be accountable to the needs of the majority of people who live and work here – low to middle income working families and small businesses.
In an effort to protect our community from displacement and address the critical need to maintain and create truly affordable housing for our community, the Coalition to Protect Chinatown & the Lower East Side with the Hunter College Center of Community Planning and Development has developed a rezoning plan for our community.
We invite you to our community informational meeting to learn more about this rezoning plan and be a positive part of this effort to protect our community. Together, we can ensure that the Chinatown & Lower East Side community remains Our Community.
