Had Enough with Pataki & LMDC?

For months residents from the Lower East Side and Chinatown have submitted over two thousand applications to the LMDC yet their only response has been to reject a fraction of the applications while thousands of people continue to be ignored. LMDC's unfair process continues to help rich West Side residents and discriminate against thousands of people living on the Lower East Side and Chinatown. This is unacceptable. From the EPA to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC), our communities' health and economic needs are suffering as a result of the government cover-ups and lies. Through several demonstrations, some changes were achieved but LMDC's relief policies under Gov. Pataki's control continues to rob the poor and feed the rich, while our elected representatives like Sheldon Silver and Joseph Bruno have simply stood by.

Governor Pataki and LMDC have plans to use the $1.3 billion in remaining funds to subsidize luxury housing development for the rich and that will kick out low-income residents of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. Meanwhile, no money has gone to protect current low-income housing. No money has gone to protect our health - every day we're getting sicker and sicker from the toxic fallout of the 9/11 disaster. No money has gone to protect and set aside jobs for working people living in the Lower East Side and Chinatown

We demand Gov. Pataki, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, NY Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno & LMDC take immediate action to:

  • Re-open the LMDC Residential Grant Program.
  • Fix the confusing application process and unjust documentation requirements.
  • Amend the current eligibility boundaries to at least up to 14th street.
  • Change their discriminatory policies so that everyone be treated equally under this program and that each family be entitled to the same amount of relief.
  • Keep the "surplus" funds in Lower Manhattan to assist 9-11 survivors to rebuild our health and our lives and restore low-income housing through initiatives that address the true needs of the community.

Speak out and let Governor Pataki, Sheldon Silver and Joseph Bruno know that we want the money to protect our health, homes and jobs!
