A federal judge ordered three owners and managers
of New Silver Palace Restaurant to pay $2.9 million to 17 waiters
and busboys. Farther back in 2003 nine other managers and owners
of the restaurant settled out of court for a total of $500,000.
The workers have picketed for over 7 years protesting a fake bankruptcy,
harassment, violence, unpaid wages and stolen tips. When the restaurant
closed the workers merely moved their picket to a new target,
the Eastbank. The owner of the bank, Joseph Chu, is also the biggest
landlord in Chinatown and is landlord to the restaurant. The workers
have evidence that, in addition to rent payments, he personally
collected millions of dollars from the restaurant in the form
of interest on loans that were allegedly made to the restaurant
by his bank. Apparently millions of stolen tips and unpaid wages
went into Chu's pocket. Support the workers on the longest-running
picket in New York history - now in front of Eastbank -- and demand
Joseph Chu give the workers' their due.
