This Chinese New Year wont be a joyous occasion
for delivery workers at Our Place Restaurant, where ten delivery
workers have sued the restaurant after they paid them as little
as $1.75 per hour. Even at this measly rate, owners relentlessly
rushed the workers in making deliveries, even forcing them to
do kitchen and dining room duties as part of their sidework.
These delivery workers faced constant harassment and scolding
on the job: owners did not give delivery workers any time to eat
dinner, made 50 workers use one toilet while another bathroom
was available, and deducted half of their daily wages if they
were only 15 minutes late. The boss would care less if workers
got into an accident on the job; workers had to pay their own
medical expenses. If they received a traffic ticket on the job,
they had to pay for it. After some had worked there for more than
10 years, owner Kong Ping Chen fired them, because they demanded
minimum wage under the law and requested to report taxes.
These delivery workers say enough is enough. They will be joined
by other delivery workers from around New York City and community
groups to protest these practices in front of the restaurant this
Thursday.
