Hunger Strike Helped Build Bridges

The seven-day hunger strike by 14 injured workers in May exposed NY State Gov. Pataki's assault on our health, highlighting longer work hours, a failing workers' comp system and the cover-up of post-9-11 toxic air. The strikers won extensive coverage in the Spanish, Polish and Chinese press, and pierced the blackout on these issues in many other media forums. They also won attention from politicians. Most important of all, however, the strikers won new allies to the fight for workers health. In particular, many who learned about NMASS through the hunger strike have been taking the message to communities of faith. Riverside Church invited NMASS to meet with their congregation on a regular basis. A hunger striker was also the main speaker at a major Catholic Charities conference. Many more religious institutions are finding new ways to work with us. Other groups are spreading the word through their newspapers; one human rights group is considering doing a human-rights investigation; another group may make workers' health a programmatic priority in its next year's agenda.
