Justice Will Be Served!
Over 10 Years of Service Workers Fighting Back
Justice Will Be Served! (JWBS) is a campaign
led by service workers in New York State who are fighting
against long hours, second-class wages, stolen tips and other
sweatshop conditions, and for fair wages, control over their
time, and respect. We bring together restaurant, housekeeping,
laundry room and other workers to fight for our rights.
Through our campaign hundreds of workers have stood up to
their employers to demand justice, including Benihana Workers,
King Chef Buffet workers, New Silver Palace (restaurant now
called Dong Khanh) workers and many others.
Among our victories: In the year 2000 we
won the first wage increase in almost 10 years for tipped
restaurant employees in New York State; New Silver Palace
workers won their jobs back in 1999 after picketing the restaurant,
defeating management's effort to eliminate pro-union workers.
The New Silver Palace workers continue to fight on for an
end to tip-stealing, harrassment and threats at their workplace.
Together we continue to fight for the right of tipped employees
in New York state to receive the federal minimum wage. Many
other workers continue to organize.
Since September 11, JWBS has reached out particularly to service
workers affected by the World Trade Center disaster. One group
of workers who lost their jobs in the September 11 tragedy
and are now fighting for their jobs are the World Trade Center
Marriott workers.
