Last May, 14 workers in New York City rose from
extreme hardship to embark on a daring, seven-day hunger strike
outside of NYS Governor Patakis office. Rising From
Our Hardship: Hunger Strike for Our Health is a glimpse
into the seven day journey to challenge Governor Patakis
policies that force injured workers to wait as long as 10 or more
years for Workers Compensation benefits, and that ignore
the health needs of working people. With their health already
frail from years of injury, the hunger strikers were uncertain
that they could last seven days sleeping in the cold rain without
eating, but after suffering years of humiliation and poverty under
NYS Governor Patakis administration, these injured workers
were determined.
My health right now is very poor, but I will
strive to finish these seven days. We injured workers have lost
our human rights. We have no choice but to hunger strike.
